Digital Safety Strategies: Mitigating and Preventing Queerphobic Online Hate

We are excited to announce that ODLAN has received funding from the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund for the project “Digital Safety Strategies: Mitigating and Preventing Queerphobic Online Hate.” For this project, we will be building on our previous research on anti-2SLGBTQIA+ online hate to develop six publicly available modules that will support 2SLGBTQIA+ non-profit leaders in understanding anti-2SLGBTQIA+ online hate from an intersectional perspective. The modules will also support service providers with developing and implementing a digital safety plan.

Thanks to the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund, Canadian Red Cross , Community Foundations of Canada, and United Way Canada for their support in making this project a reality.

Past Projects

Digital Citizen Contribution Program Grant

This project will capture 2SLGBTQ+ professional experiences with online hate. Our objective is to capture how nonprofits and charities that service 2SLGBTQ+ communities become targets of online harassment by conducting and analyzing in-depth interviews. Using a feminist intersectional approach, we will critically examine how online hate-groups target organizations that serve 2SLGBTQ+ people and how they mitigate these issues. This project will identify current strategies organizations use to support 2SLGBTQ+ members of their organization who are victims of cyberviolence.

New Horizons Seniors Program Grant

ODLAN received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors project, Combating Digital Exclusion: Mobilizing Educational Resources to Remove Digital Divide Barriers. This funding allowed us to update our searchable resource database and raise awareness on the challenges 2SLGBTQ+ older adults experience accessing the Internet.

Thank you to the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for the funding support provided to ODLAN. It will make a significant difference in improving the lives of 2SLGBTQ+ older adults in our communities. – make sure there is a link to the resource portal and the resource packet under the project description.
