How to combat far-right hate and fascism online

How to combat far-right hate and fascism online

· Be vigilant about who and what you amplify to your social media audiences

· Do the benefits of sharing hateful material outweigh the risks?

· If yes, you can watermark hateful material with antifascist slogan or symbols to hide the private information of the original poster

· These redactions are not meant to respect the privacy of the original poster but to limit their growth

Rather than relying on social media companies to self-regulate, it can be more effective to target the payment processors that provide services like domain hosting and advertising to fascists and the far right. One example is advocating for demonetization on a platform like YouTube. Fascists will always be able to fundraise on fringe platforms or their own, but their reach is limited when large payment processors cut those ties.

Most social media platforms will allow you to report hateful content and this can prevent or at least minimize the spread of hate, misinformation, and targeted harassment. Reporting is not always effective on its own and the corporations who run these platforms are motivated by profits and negative content is profitable.
