The Ontario Digital Literacy and Access Network’s (ODLAN) is looking for a Peer Support Group Moderator to join our team for the “Digital Resilience: Addressing the Rise of Transphobic Online Hate through Community-Based Research” project!

About ODLAN

We offer a directory of existing digital literacy and access services along with our own resources on how the digital divide is impacting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.We consult with a variety of organisations to build the infrastructure and capacity to create 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive online resources and programming. By promoting digital security, equity, and access our mission is to create more inclusive virtual spaces that are accessible to everyone.

Project Description: The purpose of this research project is to gather data on how Two Spirit, trans, and nonbinary (2STN+) communities, inclusive of gender nonconforming and intersex people, experience transphobic online hate, gain an understanding of the strategies used to address transphobic online hate, and determine the feasibility of creating a tool for tracking and reporting transphobic online hate.

Role Description: We are seeking a motivated and community-oriented Peer Support Group Moderator to join our project team. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of online harassment, specifically targeting 2STN+ (Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and/or intersex) communities, and possess the skills necessary to moderate group discussions on Discord. The Peer Support Group will run for six months and will be comprised on 2STN+ professionals who work for 2SLGBTQIA+ community organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Moderate group discussion
  • Monitor channel for inappropriate, discriminatory, or offensive content
  • Collaborate with the project team to determine key themes and areas of interest for group discussion and workshops

Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of online harassment, particularly anti-2STN+ harassment
  • Experience working with 2STN+ communities
  • Experience with group moderation and/or facilitation
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with online group moderation and facilitation
  • Experience with conflict resolution
  • Familiarity with Discord
  • Lived experience with the 2STN+ community

Timeline:

Discord channel will go live at the end of September and will run for six months. Weekly workload is expected to be 2-3 hours for moderation.
